Peachy Fairy Tales
The Local Ecological and Economical Cuisine (LILEK) project of the Czech Climate Advocates used the spellbinding genre of fairy tales to convey their message about the positive health, environmental and economic aspects of eating locally produced, seasonal food.
Through the magical words of ‘Once upon a time...’ the Climate Advocates conveyed the importance of eating seasonal food that has been locally produced. Their aim was clear: through changing the way we choose what to eat our world has more chance of living ‘happily ever after’. By eating local seasonal fruits and vegetables we can reduce the impact of food production and transport on climate change. The book gave both adults and children food for thought with stories that reflect the four seasons; fun educational activities such as puzzles and colouring pages, and a section for adults with web links and recipes using locally produced and seasonal vegetables. The fairy tale book was launched in the city of Brno on the Day of Earth in April 2010. The Climate Advocates not only provided useful information and educational activities for children, but also gave the visitors a chance to taste their message through providing them with delicious home-made, seasonal and local food. The Peachy Fairy Tales project then went national with coverage on the TV channel Prima, attracting a lot of interest from parents, NGOs and nursery schools. The representation of the European Commission in the Czech Republic provided significant financial support for the project.
