Celebration of Challenge Europe in Prague: film, debate and Climate Advocates show PDF Print E-mail

15 March was a very special day for the Challenge Europe team in the Czech Republic. They decided to celebrate the end of the project by hosting three different events – a public film screening, followed by a discussion session and a big get-together for all participants and partners of the project.

The team organised a public screening of the film Going for Green: Britain’s 2012 Dream. This unique documentary about the construction of a sports park for the London Olympic Games focuses on the sustainability of the construction. The discussion, which followed, was mainly about the issues surrounding revitalisation of city areas and brown fields. The speakers included heads from Prague’s planning and development, and spatial planning departments.

The intellectual debate on this serious topic was followed by a true celebration at the British Embassy in Prague. The British Ambassador HMA Sian MacLeod welcomed everyone to the stately premises and after a brief speech by the project patron, Senator Prof. Bedřich Moldan, the ‘stage’ belonged to the climate advocates from all three years of the project. It was a real swift ‘one man show’, because every team representative had to present its project’s results in just 90 seconds! After the last presentation one could see that ideas for the reduction of CO2 emissions were not only very diverse, but also really innovative. ‘It is great to see the enthusiasm of the Climate Advocates and the potential of their projects to “live” beyond the Challenge Europe project. That was one of our main aims and I think we can proudly say that we have succeeded’ says Marta Brichova, the Project Manager.

The event also had an international aspect as guests could have a look at an accompanying exhibition Be Inspired!, which presented a selection of project outcomes from various participating European countries.

This grass-roots project aimed to be the first step in helping a densely populated Athenian community to make lasting changes towards sustainability in a socially and historically important area of the capital. The project focused on changing behaviour through a series of workshops which informed people about energy efficiency and ‘greening’ initiatives in buildings.
