Midsummer in Somerset PDF Print E-mail

Thirty-one Climate Advocates, from ten different countries, gathered in the idyllic setting of Ammerdown Centre in Somerset last week to further develop their project proposals to reduce carbon use. The three-day event, organised in collaboration with LEAD International was filled to bursting point with activities set around team building, learning and leadership, how to cascade training and finally How to Change the World!

On Friday evening they started off by creating a Vision and Values Statement for the whole group while simultaneously learning the snowball technique. Saturday and Sunday sessions focused on turning ideas into proposals; developing successful partnerships; learning about Open Space Technology and Social Networking; organising a successful party; reflecting on learning; and practising skills acquired.

Daniel Rees (28), a Climate Advocate from Norway said: “The weekend in Ammerdown gave me a lot of interesting input on how to run workshops and project work. And meeting Climate Advocates from across Europe was fun and gave new inspiration that we can actually make a change.”

Since it was midsummer, participants also found the time to give a hilarious rendition of some of the more memorable scenes from A Midsummer Night’s Dream which was performed outdoors in the beautiful gardens.

Juliane Nier, trainer at LEAD International said: “I was amazed and inspired by this group of enthusiastic, creative and active change makers.”

‘Don’t shop, swap!‘ was the idea behind the initiative which encouraged people to swap their goods rather than throw them away, re-use old products instead of buying new ones and by doing that help decrease CO2 emissions from the productionof new items.
