News

Two Polish climate advocates have worked with Our Earth Foundation - a Challenge Europe project partner in Poland, to create a climate change portal, one of early initiatives of this kind in Poland. The result is really impressive. Michał Brennek occupies the position of project manager and Sabina Michalska joined the team as content co-ordinator for the website. Here is what “the owner of the idea”, Marcin Popkiewicz, writes about the outcome of their co-operation:

Portal
ziemianarozdrozu.pl is a unique source of information on climate change and its connections with fossil fuels, oil peak, food crisis, economy and society.
At
ziemianarozdrozu.pl you can find not only daily news and a comprehensive encyclopaedia of climate change related topics, but also world-class unique multimedia interactive tools:

  • Emissions visualization – shows how much carbon dioxide we release into the atmosphere.
  • Personal CO2 emissions calculator – translates your lifestyle into the carbon footprint. Attractive form and easy to use interface is combined with advanced algorithms and database of all countries. Calculations are based on the selected country’s energy mix, climate and purchasing power.
  • Climate change simulator – shows how our individual emissions of carbon dioxide sum up and increase its concentration in the atmosphere, what is the role of carbon sinks and how important climate feedbacks are. You will see, how these factors change the amount of energy received by the surface, how much will increase the Earth’s temperature and how will the Earth’s future look like, when the temperature will grow degree by degree. You will also be able to easily change the climate model parameters and limit our CO2 emissions.

These tools are also available in English at earthatcrossroads.com

Our initiative is not limited to the Internet – we also give lectures, take part in TV and radio recordings and do our best in every way we can to impact a large scale paradigm change.

We invite you to visit our site, take a look and join our team.

Laura Martonová - Laura Martonová is a graduate from Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia, Faculty of Natural Sciences, where she specialized on the environmental geology. She also holds the MSc degree from the Technical University in Vienna where she took a special programme called "New Energy - Renewable Energy in Central and Eastern Europe. She worked as a creator, manager and coordinator of projects focussed on waste separation, sustainable forest management and wood biomass use for energy production. Nowadays she is with a consulting and advisory company dealing with renewable energies and energy efficiency. She believes that the change must be initiated from the bottom and the municipal administration level is the one still low enough to keep in touch with individuals in the local community yet  high enough to be able to see real and tangible results and benefits of their work. To Challenge Europe she offers, apart of her enthusiasm, a specific "multidimensional" point of view to the topic - having experiences with the environmental volunteering actions, as well as the business point of view, the municipal strategic development point of view, and at last some experiences with project implementation.
